Mike - Underground Platform Operator

Could you please tell us something about the idea behind Support The Underground at the beginning.
Mike: The idea behind this project was to support local and international bands through concerts, promotion, and various other activities. More than 5 years ago, during the Covid pandemic, I had more time to focus on such projects and started this initiative together with my cooperation partner, Markus Winkler from Mars Music Production. Since then, we have released 5 compilation albums featuring more than 100 bands from different countries. I am currently working on the sixth edition of the compilation. In addition, I have organized around 20 concerts in Vienna under this project name and nearly 500 (total) under Musicjunky Bookings & Records (MJ).

As mentioned, you are also behind MJ. Thus, you are extremely broadly positioned. How can all this be reconciled? Do you sometimes have the feeling that certain areas are neglected or does your day just have 36 hours and everything is easy to handle?
Mike: Yes, it probably looks like a team of 10 people is working on it, but it’s just me doing my best and focusing on it whenever I can, day or night. Of course, I have some people which help me - friends like Carina, Mario, Sascha, Bernd or also my family (my wife Irene and my daughter Alina). This has always been my dream. I first had the idea for MJ around 2000 and brought it to life many years later, around 2017/18.

What made you a music junky yourself? What are you into and are there also bands/music genres that you don’t stand at all ... if so, why?
Mike: I have been listening to and collecting records and CDs for many years, and I’ve read a lot of books about bands and music in general. Around 2000, I was having a few beers with a friend, and after talking about music for hours, he said to me: “You’re a real music junky.” When I had the idea to start something like this, I knew I had to use the name MJ. I listen to many different genres, but there are some bands and styles I don’t like or connect with, such as black metal, schlager or modern pop.
