Micha - Festival Organization Team

Who is behind the Voices From The Streets Festival, and how did it all start? 2026 marks the 21st edition.
Micha: There is no political party or association behind this. We are a circle of friends from various subcultures with an anti-fascist ethos. We started in 2004 with the intention of bringing subcultural events and experiences to the province while sending a clear message against right-wing extremism. From the very beginning, our goal was to create a space for diversity, openness, and alternative culture in a region where such initiatives were rare.

How do you manage to finance the festival completely without entrance fees? In this day and age, this is almost a novelty. What is important to you about the festival? What is particularly crucial to you?
Micha: We rely on proceeds from drink sales; the bands waive their fees because of the message (solidarity instead of racism), and there are occasional private donations. We do not accept state funding.

What criteria do you use to select the artists for the festival? A certain range of styles seems to be important to you in any case. Am I seeing this correctly?
Micha: Subculture is generally important to us, with a particular focus on punk. Everyone brings something from „their own subculture“ to the table. The acts should be free of rock-star attitudes and have a genuine understanding of the DIY ethos.
