Please tell us in a few words about the band and its foundation. On top of that, I would be interested to know where the band name comes from and what it has to do with your great affinity for football?

Michel: We originally came together to write two songs for an alternative public viewing during the 2018 World Cup. That’s why we called ourselves THE PUTITINS - a play on “put it in,” like scoring a goal. The name had a fun, ironic vibe that suited our beginnings. Years later, we were set to release our music under that name - complete with artwork, merch, and a show - when the war in Ukraine began. The name quickly became problematic. To avoid confusion, we switched overnight to BAFFO D’ORO, a name without niche associations but with a similar visual logo. Within days we had new branding, merch, and vinyl covers - true to our DIY roots.

DIY is very important to you, but you take a very pragmatic approach. For everything you can’t do yourself, help is called. What do you do yourself and where do you need help? Why is DIY so important to you?

Michel: DIY is both a financial necessity and a mindset. Within the band, we use our own skills: our bassist does a lot of the artwork and visuals; I do booking and funding. But we don’t hesitate to bring in pros for things like mixing and mastering. Therefore, DIY gives us the freedom to shape our direction, maintain control and have fun, while staying efficient with resources but be open for pro-support where we need it.

The song “Listen” is against the forgetting of people who have to leave their loved ones, their lives, their center of life. What would be the last thing you would do if you had to leave?

Michel: As the main lyricist, empathy is a central value for me. My years in development work shaped my perspective. I’ve met people forced to leave everything behind. How would I react? Hard to say. Maybe, as the line in the song states: “One last glimpse to the pictures on the wall” - something simple: look one last time at something that is special to you.
