Christopher Damm - Tourmanager/Backliner/Guitartech

Tourmanager, backliner, guitartech – how and when did you get into that business? How did you survive during Corona, which was a hard time for your industry?
Christopher: I started working for a backline rental company in 2018 and have been self-employed since 2019. Since I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years, I knew my career choice very early on. I only survived 2020-2022 thanks to a good friend who hired me as an e-commerce service worker at his company.

How many days a year are you on the road and how does a normal working day on tour look like for you?
Christopher: That varies between 100-150 concerts in 150-200 days, depending on which bands you’re working with. Wake up, venue/stage inspection, breakfast, smoke, unload, set up, sound check, dismantle, lunch, instrument care/repairs, hang out with colleagues, changeover, showtime, dismantling, loading, shower, after-show drink, bus call, time to sleep.

Which abilities are particularly important to you in your work, and do you have tips for people that also think about starting a career in that biz?
Christopher: Resilience, interest in music/instruments, teamwork skills, loyalty. The best tip I have for getting started: find a small band and grow with them. After a few months, you’ll be connected to other productions and know what specific tasks you want to take on. That’s what happened to me.

Release date: 18th of May, 2025
