Weslie Negron Pagan - Music Consultant

How often do you have to deal with artists who hire you and then sit back because they think „Dropout Media is on board, now success will come by itself“? How do you deal with these expectations?
W.: It used to happen before when people weren’t clear that they also had to put in the work so the partnership would work. Now one of the first things I say on our first encounters is precisely that they need to understand that this is a shared effort from both sides and that for it to work they need to put in practice what we’re seeing from the outside and they’re usually very diligent about it.

How do I have to imagine working with new customers with you? How and who analyzes the band and their material? How do you deal with potential customers who simply “lack the necessary substance” to work with you?
W.: Usually from the round of intake answers we get before we assemble the “6 Month Marketing Plan” I check all their presence online, their Spotify monthly listeners, social media followers and engagement (which leads to understanding if they have botted followers, etc.). I also really deep dive on their music, the production, and the overall composition to understand what kind of level of artists/band we’re working with. I think those artists that „lack the necessary substance“ to work with us are actually easier to work with because we can reset everything starting from 0 versus bands that have experience where we have to accommodate their probable existing plans.

Which customer group do you focus on with your Instagram channel Bacons.Bits?
W.: Bacons Bits is mostly focused on the independent artist that is looking for an answer in an oversaturated music industry where there’s way too much information but not specifics of what works and what doesn’t. Honestly every artist’s journey is different and not everything within Bacons Bits is 100% applicable to everyone, however, by posting 5 times a day pretty much every day, I hope there’s a piece of information someone can find useful and can apply it to their careers, so it has a positive impact on them.
