Nadine Schmidt - Online Magazine Publisher
Nadine: kf.de has existed since 2019, and it’s just me behind it! I wanted to be able to report on bands and books that I find interesting, free from deadlines and character limits. There were also attempts with other editors, but that only complicated the process, as I run krachfink.de entirely in my free time alongside a regular job and prefer to organize everything myself.
You also write for VISONS & OX-Fanzine. How do your contributions on your own platform differ from your guest contributions to the magazines? How much effort do you put into your work as a music editor in your free time?
Nadine: kf.de differs mainly in the selection and depth of the articles. Even when I also evaluate technical skills, it’s ultimately the subtle, inexplicable nuances that make bands interesting. To bring these aspects, which appeal to a truly interested audience, to the fore, I use unusual formulations and often assume a certain level of musical knowledge. That doesn’t have space or audience in print magazines. At the moment, I spend about 20 hours per month on it; during peak periods, it can easily take 60 hours per month - not including listening to music and reading books.
What criteria do you use to pick out the bands for your reviews/interviews? What still appeals to you to go „hunting“ after so many years in the music business?
Nadine: Through listening to music for several hours every day and constantly engaging with it, also analytically, I can tell within seconds whether a band still has something exciting to contribute from my perspective, or if it’s just the next “sounds-like-everybody” group. There are countless talented bands, and I enjoy discovering them before they make their way into the big magazines. Most of them are even more exciting at that stage. My latest discovery is BAHNHOF MOTTE, with their interesting and fresh take on art-punk.
