Kevin Kurtz - Audio Engineer/Studio Manager

How long has Tube Gain Music (TBM) been around? What prompted you to found TGM and where are your personal musical roots?
Kevin: TGM has been in existence since 2020. Due to my work as a guitarist, I had to register a business and so I included my work as a sound engineer in the process. I wanted to be able to make a living from music in the long term, and I achieved that this year.

In addition to working in the studio, you also give lessons, do workshops, rent out rehearsal rooms and are a session musician. Have I forgotten something and why do you think it is so important to position yourself so broadly? How important is the cooperation with the Fiddlers Green Pub in this construct?
Kevin: That’s right. The music scene is a highly competitive market. What’s more, each of these jobs’ feeds into the others. Through my work as a teacher and session guitarist, I can help lots of musicians in the studio to perform better and get more out of the songs musically. The owner of Fiddlers Green Pub owns the studio, and I rent and manage it. Jens, the owner, knows a lot of people and has been established there for 20 years. Of course, I benefit immensely from that. That’s why this collaboration is extremely important to me.

In your daily studio life, what are the biggest mistakes of bands that you experience again and again? What tips do you have for bands to prepare and when working in the studio?
Kevin: They rush the studio production, often haven’t quite finished the songs yet. The best thing is to record the songs yourself as often as possible. The sound doesn’t have to be like it is in the studio - it’s about practicing. Guitar solos, drum fills, etc. must also be played well during rehearsals. It doesn’t do anyone any good to edit a solo or whatever in the studio to make it sound good if it can’t be performed live in the end.
