David Zuser - Editor-In-Chief

Earshot.at (E.at) has been around since 1999. Can you still tell us something about your origins, what has changed over the years and where E.at wants to go?
D: I was recruited by a founding member, but most of them had withdrawn for various reasons (family, job, etc.) in the late 2000s. The biggest change has been in the music business itself. Releases are much more accessible thanks to streaming/downloading, and as a music editor, you no longer have physical stacks of CDs piling up at home. This has also permanently changed the medium of magazines; everything has become much more short-lived and faster. There is no master plan for where we want to go. The important thing is that we continue to enjoy what we do, that people like reading us, and that we can bring bands/musicians closer to the public and support the (local) music scene at least a little bit with our efforts.

E.at is an „interactive music magazine“ without limitation to certain styles. Do you try to position yourself even more broadly with new people or are there also limits? What do bands have to bring with them to get noticed by E.at?
D: There are no strict genre boundaries; instead, we are guided by the slogan “All Kinds of Heavy Music,” which allows us to maintain a certain openness. New team members also enable us to broaden our spectrum and cover certain genres with greater expertise.
We become aware of bands through our network of contacts with labels/promoters/musicians. We are often contacted directly. Since we like to support the (Austrian) underground, we are happy to help with news on the website or social media posts, or even try to accommodate reviews, depending on our capacity, whether it’s punk rock r black metal.

I’ve seen that you’re still looking for new editors. What do people have to bring with them to be able to join E.at?
D: Of course, we can only cover a small part of the entire musical offering of releases and concerts, and we are always happy to welcome new talent and reinforcement. The most important thing you need to bring to E.at is a passion for music and the joy of sharing it with our readers.
