Marie Lehmann - Photographer/Videographer

How did you get into photography and what particularly appeals to you about photography in the context of art/music?
Marie: I’ve always had a camera with me since I was a teenager – when traveling or in everyday life. And I love photographing art. For a long time, my focus was on street art and street photography. For 3.5 years now, my focus has been on music and concerts. It started with a random thought: I love photography and going to concerts, so why not take my camera with me tonight? I think it’s a great challenge and opportunity at the same time to capture the energy of large and small clubs, as well as bands and crowds across all genres of music.

I haven’t seen many classic band pictures/press pictures on your profiles. Are you also open to something like that or is your focus primarily on live events? Are you focused on certain styles of music or are you generally tempted by any kind of music when it comes to capturing it visually?
Marie: Yes, I also do band portraits & press pictures and a lot of different things besides concerts - sometimes even weddings and corporate events. I’m just not the best at posting everything on Instagram. But it’s very exciting to see where photography takes me - often to interesting new places that I would never have discovered otherwise. And yes, regarding genres, there’s really a bit of everything - sometimes it’s a wild journey from jazz to punk to indie in just a few days.

What is particularly important to you in order to present a band well live? Lighting, stage acting by the band, clothes, the band playing with the camera, or have I forgotten something else?
Marie: First of all, it’s my job to make a band look good in pictures and videos, even if there are challenging conditions. But of course, dynamic lighting, interactions between band members with each other, the audience and the camera, as well as special outfits, individual performance elements or small decorative elements, make my job easier. Most importantly, though, the band should have fun. That definitely comes across in the pictures!
