Frank Bielichen - Photographer

How did you get into photography and what particularly appeals to you about photography in the context of concert photography? Can bands also book you for press photos?
Frank: Photography has always appealed to me, although I don’t really remember exactly why anymore. At some point I started doing concert photography, which allowed me to combine it with another big passion of mine: rock and metal. The energy, atmosphere, and dynamics on stage are what fascinate me the most. Yes, bands can also contact me for press photos. I’m always happy to receive such requests.

You are specifically focused on rock and metal. I assume that these are also your favorite music styles. Would it be difficult for you to capture a jazz, blues, pop or classical concert with your camera because of this fact? Simply because you have no connection to those kinds of music or is it basically easy for you to put everything in the right light?
Frank: As I already mentioned, rock and metal are my favorite types of music. In general, I could also imagine photographing other genres. However, it is important for me that the music somehow moves me and draws me in, otherwise it becomes difficult to capture the right mood and energy with my camera.

What is particularly important to you in order to present a band well live? Lighting, dynamics/excessive stage acting by the band, clothes, the band playing with the camera, or have I forgotten something else?
Frank: To photograph musicians properly, lighting is the key factor. The band should be well lit from the front, while the background ideally provides a nice play of colors. However, even the best lighting doesn’t help if there is no movement on stage. Good concert photos need dynamics and energy and above all, the musicians’ passion has to be visible. Those are exactly the moments I try to capture with my camera.
