Etjen Vd Vliet - Stage-, Tour- & Artist Manager
How did you come to work as a tour manager, stage manager, artist manager etc.?
Etjen: I never planned on a career in the music industry - it happened naturally through the DIY punk scene. In the early 2000s, I started organizing local shows and helping friends‘ bands tour, and when I realized there was a growing need for someone to manage tour logistics, I founded Just Like Your Mom. From there, my work expanded from tour management into stage management and artist management. Every step came from being involved, building relationships, and taking on new challenges, allowing me to turn a passion for live music into a multifaceted career.

In addition to the jobs mentioned above, you also listed „Mom“ on Instagram. I assume that the interpersonal needs of artists and crew are meant here, which you have to treat. What are you confronted with here and why is it important to be present on this level as well?
Etjen: I jokingly describe myself as „Mom“ because my job goes far beyond managing tours. I’m often the person who makes sure everyone is doing okay - whether that’s solving problems, keeping people on schedule, making sure they’ve eaten, or simply being there when someone needs support. Looking after the artists and crew is just as important as handling the logistics, and that’s what „Mom“ represents to me.
What do you recommend to people who are also thinking about becoming active in this field (stage manager, etc.)? Is there a tip that this group of people should definitely take to heart?
Etjen: My biggest piece of advice is to get involved and gain experience. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity - go to shows, volunteer, help bands, and learn by doing. This industry is built on trust and relationships, so being reliable, staying calm under pressure, and always being willing to help will take you much further than simply having technical skills. Every opportunity I got came from being present, working hard, and building connections with people along the way.
