Frank "Otti" van Düren - Journalist/Author/Photographer/DJ
Who is behind Nightshade Magazin (NM), how long have you been around, and how many editors work for you? In addition to the magazine, there is also a shop. What do people need to know about this and possibly about other projects from you?
Otti: NM was founded by me, Otti, in 2005. At the moment, there are around 5 people besides me who contribute material from time to time, but this number varies. The story behind the shops is far too complex to tell in a short format like this. All you need to know is that they still provide me with some basic income, which helps me to do my journalistic work. The most important activity is definitely the YouTube channel Nightshade TV, but also that I DJ from time to time and work for several print magazines.

You cover a wide range of topics – DAVID GARRETT News, CRYPTA at Rage Against Racism Festival, etc. Where does this wide range come from? Aren’t you afraid that this breadth might cost you readers/interested parties?
Otti: This results from my personal wide range of interests and those of the people who are or have been part of NM. I love being curious and discovering the world, not only limiting myself to one subculture, genre, or whatever. And why should it cost audience? Sure, some people are stuck in their bubble and only want to have input exclusively from that, but most people have a variety of interests and pick what they like out of the big content cosmos. Also, this raises chances for our partners to be discovered by people who never heard of them or only know their name. That’s who we do our work for. And my personal opinion is: Life is too short to limit yourself.
Are there any ideas, visions, dreams that you still want to realize with NM? Where do you want to go on your journey?
Otti: Give me an interview with Robert Smith (THE CURE) and I can retire! Just kidding! I have many more ideas than time to implement them. And many of the coolest and biggest adventures in my life came by chance, not by planning them. So, the big plan is: Never stand still, always stay curious, and see where the road leads me!
